Organ Rolls Converted to MIDI Files

Salvaged from a discarded organ console, this roll spool box now is the basis for converting paper roll data into MIDI files.  A governor controlled electric motor drives the paper roll mechanism.  Both sizes of Aeolian organ rolls fit in this spool box.  Pictured is the smaller 116 note roll which is held by an adapter mechanism.  Directly behind the spool box are three contact boxes which are connected by tubes to the holes in the tracker bar.  The contact boxes feed low voltage signals via flat cables to the MIDI processor which is out of view to the right. The newly created MIDI signal is fed back to the laptop computer which stores the data in a file.  The signal also is fed into the module left of the computer.  The module generates an audio signal so the music can be heard as it is recorded.

In the background, the jackbox toggle control system for the Duo Art can be seen.  The recording device is in the room directly below the swell division.

What's next?  The best 116 note rolls are upgraded to full Duo Art format.  That process is a bit tedious and is explained here in a short version, or here for a long version.
