The organ pipes stand on top of a "toe board". Each
pipe fits into a tapered hole called a "toe hole". The toe board is
the top part of the organ chest which delivers wind to the pipe. After
the toe boards are refinished, the tapered holes are burnished to assure a
snug fit. The burnishing tool is mounted in a drill press and is heated
with a torch. After the temperature is hot enough to just barely singe
the wood, the burnishing begins. The spinning tool is lowered into
each hole to yield a smooth finish with a neat appearance.
The burnishing tool is made from heat treated steel and has been shaped to
isolate the heat in the tip of the tool. After the burnishing
process begins, the tool stays hot due to the friction generated, and the
heating torch is no longer needed. Yes, that is smoke in the photo!
