This is the bottom of the chest with the bottom boards
removed. The bottom boards contain air channels that connect to the
holes seen here. Each rail is for a single rank of pipes. One
side of the rail contains the pallet valve action for the Great, and the
other side contains the action for the Choir. Every pipe on this chest
can be played by both actions, thus it is a duplex chest.
Two sets of primary valves, not pictured, mount on the side of the chest
which is at the top. The bottom boards then carry the wind which activates
the pallet valves through these holes. The opposing pallet valves are
tied together so that if a note is played by both the great and choir at
the same time, each valve will only open 1/2 way. The theory being
that the pipe always gets the same wind.
This chest holds 8 ranks of 61 pipes each. Each pipe has two pallet
pipe valves for a total of 961 pallet valves and pouches. It is virtually
impossible it reach most of the pallets and pouches once the chest is fully
assembled. Some minor regulation is possible using long tweezers.
