Duo Art Organ Rolls
Not Cataloged

Catalog A

Many collectors have reported unusual rolls that were either "private" issue or "limited" issue.  Four rolls have been recently identified as not being listed in any "known" catalog.   Aeolian-Skinner issued "Catalog A" at sometime after the merger. That appears to be the last catalog.   Patrons must have been notified by some means that "new" rolls were available after "Catalog A" was published.

These rolls below are not listed in any catalog up through Catalog A.  The sale of the rolls would have been in 1938 or later as the box label is a modified Aeolian-Hammond organ roll label.  That player electric organ instrument was introduced in 1938.

Two of the rolls appear to have been issued also as Aeolian-Hammond rolls as the label is printed with the three digit Aeolian-Hammond roll number modified to have four digits found in the earlier scheme.  The Andante Cantabile roll seems to be number 333 for the Aeolian-Hammond, and 3335 for the Duo Art pipe organ.  The Finlandia roll is 226 for the electric organ, but given a totally different number of 3531 for the pipe organ.  The other two labels don't have printed titles, but rather typed or rubber stamped information.  The Bach (faded rubber stamp) "Chorale Preludes" is roll number 3414.

Roll 3335 gives rise to some speculation.  Aeolian often grouped recordings of artists in "nearly" consecutive roll numbers.  Using that scheme as a guide, it appears that roll 3335 was recorded by Chandler Goldthwaite, as the numbers 3331, 3333, 3337, and 3339, are all by that artist.  The even numbers in that range are not assigned, and 3335 is exactly in the center of the group.  Using the same philosophy, roll 3531 "Finlandia", falls into the Archer Gibson number scheme.  Analysis of that roll continues.  It is hand played, but may be a multiple pass recording.

In Rollin Smith's research, he notes that Goldthwaite is the most prolific organ roll artist who recorded for Skinner and others.

This copy of 3335 has one glaring error.  The initial stops drawn include the Pedal String, 16' F which is so out of place that it ruins the music.  By changing the coding to the adjacent hole, the Swell String F is drawn which seems to be the intended stop.
