The Jay Gould Home
47th and 5th Avenue, New York

At first glance, this house does not seem very impressive except for its location.   A closer look reveals that the scaling of the structure hides its large size.  Observe the window height on the first floor and compare that to the people walking on the sidewalk.  A casual calculation puts the window height at almost ten feet!  Another perspective is to compare the storefront on the left with the entry of the Gould home.  Clearly, this house was very large.

Several years after the organ was removed, the house was razed. An office building took the valuable land.  The event was reported in the New York Times September 14, 1952, real estate section
