Challenge Trip

We took five students from our college age church group on a wilderness "Challenge Trip" in the Ozarks using Discovery Ministries guides and gear. It was eight days on the river and in the woods packing all essentials with us, highlighted by a 24hr solo and fast. If you have a decent connection you can download the movie here (135meg).

Sweetheart Pageant

Every year Hoopeston Illinois hosts the Sweetheart Pageant. Its the only national Miss America competition other than the one in Las Vegas. Each contestant stays with a host family for the week of the pageant. We had the honor of Miss Maryland and Miss Georgia staying with us that week. Out of more than forty competitors, Mary King (Maryland) won 3rd runner up and Courtney Herndon (Georgia) won Miss Congeniality. They're both wonderful young Christian ladies and so talented. We had a great time and were blessed by the whole experience.

Dock Project

This Summer I've been working on a dock for our pond. The pond gets flooded by the river quite frequently and the water level fluctuates a tremendous amount, which was an added challenge for my first attempt at a dock and ramp.

Slip and Slide

Hilary gave Clay his first taste of slip and slide. Jonas was more than up to the task of showing him how it's done.

February '09

Hilary's Birthday

Jonas, clay, and I took Hilary for a weekend in Chicago for her Birthday. We stayed at a hotel on the Miracle Mile on Michigan Ave. We also got her a camera lens that she's been using to take pictures like this one.

Winter

Winters here seem so long, and I'm starting to think its because they actually ARE long. The geese start dropping by about mid February to tell us spring should be here at some point.

Music

Pandora Radio is a great music site that I've been enjoying since my brother Garret told me about it over a year ago. They have assembled "literally hundreds of musical attributes or "genes" into a very large Music Genome. Using tens of thousands of different artists - ranging from popular to obscure - and analyzed the musical qualities of each song one attribute at a time." They let you build an adaptable radio station based on any song you want. So if you like a song and want to hear more songs like it, this is a great way to find and enjoy them. Here is one of the stations I created and listen to.

October '08

Disney World

We took Jonas to Disney World for one last hoorah before his loving brother was born.

Clay Allen

Our 2nd son, Clay, was born July 29. After some initial fussiness we've welcomed him into the family and accepted him as one of our own, which he is. Please enjoy the pictures of him in his many different poses.

Boundary Waters

The last part of August I went on a 6 day canoe trip in the Boundary Waters Wilderness Area in northern Minnesota on the Canadian border. We caught a lot of fish, paddled a ton, and enjoyed seeing God's creative handy work.

March '08

Expecting

Most of you should already know, we're expecting another child in late July. We're a little bummed out that we'll probably miss our family reunions this summer, but really excited for a chance to add to our family. Jonas and I decided if its a boy we're naming him "Skippy".

Tile Shower

I finally got the tile shower and tub surround project finished. It was quite a relief filling in that final bit of grout. I've sworn off tiling anything for at least the next 12 months!

Floods

We've had two floods here recently both caused by heavy rains melting the snowcover. The later of the two flooded several hundred people out of their homes in a town just north of here. The North Fork Vermillion River, which runs about a quarter mile south of us and backs up into our pond, was close to setting all time record flood stage highs. One of the local beavers got excited with all the flooding and left us a friendly reminder that he was here first. Before / After.

December '07

Christmas Letter

Our Christmas letter gives a good overview for whats been going on this year.

Time flies

December is flying by in a hurry. It seems we've been busy every weekend since before Thanksgiving. One of our trips included downtown Chicago where we visted the Field Museum, Addler Planetarium, Shedd Aquarium, Miracle Mile, and the Marshall Fields building.

Hilary's clinic add

Here is commercial that the clinic in Hoopeston has been running on the local ESPN channels.

September '07

Settled in

We've been working hard on a long list of things for the house but we're enjoying living here as we do it. We've been taking a few weekend trips around and about which is slowing the progress a bit. We've also had some company here and there which has been a lot of fun. Hilary's job is going well, Jonas is 3 now and asks "but why" about 600 times a day, and I'm getting good at saying "Because God made it that way".

June '07

We Moved in

Well we're mostly finished with the house, and we moved in on June 15th, six months from the time we broke ground. During the process of building/moving our camera died. We have a new camera now, but I'm still on dial up at the new house. When they hook me back up to the grid I'll post the pictures that I'm sure you're all waiting to see. We're having a busy summer and there is a long list of things to do on the house and yard.

March '07

Our Frozen Pond

We have an industrious little fellow who seems to have adapted well to the ice over his head. These guys are deciding who has to fly back and tell the others. We had back-to-back sixty degree days last week that finally melted most of the ice which was 14 inches thick this winter.

Jonas ice fishing?

After a long trek around the pond looking for a fishing spot and several minutes studying the conditions, we decided that this was the best spot to dangle the "fishing line" from on that day.

House Project

The dry-wall on the house should be done in a week and then it will be time to start painting and some flooring.

February

Snow Storm

We had a pretty decent snow storm that made things interesting, fun, and a lot of "firsts" for Jonas including sledding, snowmen, snow angels, snow in the bath tub (also a first for me), and snow ice cream (yuck).

Hilary's Birthday

Isn't she like twenty-three now or something, I think?

January '07

Remodeled Bathroom

Our landlord let us remodel the bathroom of the house we're renting, and use the money spent on materials towards the rent. We went a little over budget, but I think it was well worth it and I learned a lot.

Settlers of Catan!

David and Colette got me hooked on a pretty addicting board game called Settlers of Catan. It's a nice mix of Risk and Monopoly, but the games go much faster and usually lots of people have a chance to win right to the end. It seems Monopoly and Risk can sometimes drag on forever with the winner already known, and at the end you don't want to play again for another 2 years. Settlers of Catan however can end quite quickly and lots of times will leave you wanting to try it again right away. We ended up playing it a lot during Christmas break; at Mom and Dad's, Bill and Bette's, St Louis New Years party, and the Ski lodge. Matt says Seafarers of Catan is pretty fun, and I can't wait to try it.

NBA Pacers game

We went to an Indiana Pacers NBA game January 24th at Canseco Field House in Indianapolis. The Pacers took on the defending world champions Miami Heat. It was an exciting game, the pacers were down by 20 points in the 3rd quarter, but came back and won the game in overtime. It was fun getting to see future Hall of Famers Shaq and Dwyane Wade in person, and the foot long hotdog was another highlight of the evening.

House Project

The house is now "dried in" and we're starting the "rough in" stage for electric, plumbing, and HVAC. Hilary is now working on making the tough design choices for all the lighting and bath/kitchen fixtures. We're wondering how folks did this before the internet.

December '06

Jonas's First Snow

Snow was one of the things Jonas hadn't gotten to experience yet because of living in Florence, SC. His first snow here in Illinois was just a dusting and he didn't seem too impressed after his fingers started to get cold.

House Project

The house is coming along good so far and the cold weather has held off long enough for us to get the footings and foundation mostly done. We're excited about things starting to take shape. I'll try to keep the house project page updated as things change.

Thanksgiving

My Mom and Dad came to our house for Thanksgiving. We visited one of the largest dairy operations in the country. The tour included a view of a giant carousel that milks 72 cows simultaneously.

Christmas

We had a great Christmas break and a long vacation with celebrations of Christmas in Illinois/Missouri/Wisconsin, a New Years party at Matt and Aaron's in St Louis, and skiing in West Virginia. We were partied out and glad to be home by the end.

November '06

And we're back

A lot has happened since the last post here. We moved, and now live in rural Illinois instead of South Carolina. Hilary has started her job at the clinic working part time. I'm acting as general contractor on our house project that we should be breaking ground on within the next few weeks.

Birthday Float

I used to try to take an overnight canoe trip sometime near my birthday in September, and now that we're back in the Midwest I was able to go again. We had great weather and it was a blast.

LAN party last week

Another event I can once again attend due to moving back to the Midwest is the annual November LAN Party. We all bring our computers and game into the "wee" hours. Yes, it's a nerd fest.

August 5th '05

Wow, such a busy summer

Sorry I've been missing my updates. We've been all over the place the last month and hopefully you'll enjoy some of the pictures that we've taken along the way. We'll be adding them to the Pictures sections as soon as we can get them all sorted out.

One month fishing in 5 different states

Missouri, Montana, and North Carolina I have pictures of, but also Wisconsin and South Carolina unfortunatly didn't get captured on film. I did, however, catch fish in four out of the five states!

Great Smoky Mountains hike

Hilary, Jonas, and I went on a 3 day/night 17 mile backpacking trip in the Smoky's a few weeks ago with some friends from Florence. We had a great camp spot the second night. It rained on the third day coming down from Mount Sterling.

Hike to Terrace Lake

While we were in Montana we got to take a day hike up to Terrace Lake in the Mission Range of the Rockies. Lots of breaks were needed as it was a steep 6 miles, but well worth it.

Week of June 13th

Saw this on I-26 in NC

Instead of an 18 wheeler its a 74 wheeler with some fancy load distribution design. Any ideas on what they would be hauling? It was going about 5mph at the time of these pictures, having a little trouble pulling the hill.

First cousins at the Jacks Fork

... and one blessed Grandma

Fowler's sermons

My uncle, David Fowler, has started uploading the audio files of his sermons to his website. Good quality sound, great quality preaching.

Sunday afternoon at the beach

As we headed to the beach it became apparent that it may be quite lonely by the time we get there. And yes we had it pretty much to ourselves. With no spectators around, Jonas got to practice his bow staff moves in his skivvies without being embarrassed.

Week of May 16th

Short article on how drug dogs are trained

Riddley seems to have natural diaper dog ability to detect dirty diapers early to help counteract diaper rash.

Weekend fishing trip

We had a good time at Askins's pond last weekend. We spent the night, took boat rides, and caught some delicious bass for Jonas's first fishing trip.

Sam's Club online Auction

My dad showed me this site. It's all Sam's Club merchandise which is normally good quality stuff and for the most part good prices. This site is a great way to cheaply get your online auction fix.

Week of May 9th

My little brother's birthday

It was garret's 25th birthday this week. Email me for his cell phone number if you'd like to wish him a happy birthday or just prank call him. Hot single babes are encouraged to call as well.

Quote of the week

"It's like I've been saying all along: We get good hitting and no pitching, or good pitching and no hitting. Today we finally clicked. We didn't have anything." -Ryan Freel of the Cincinnati Reds. This sounds a lot like my high school baseball team, we "clicked" often.

DEA agent shoots his leg in gun safety class

Here's the long and short versions of a video of a DEA agent who accidentally fires his weapon while teaching a class on gun safety. Note to self; don't forget the one in the chamber. (If you're using winamp+firefox and the video won't play, try pasting the URL into the "file" "open URL" menu of winamp, or just use IE.)

Week of May 2nd

Went to Medieval Times last weekend.

I think my expectations were a little high before I went, so it was kind of a let down. But I still had a lot of fun. This is a great place to take your kids, its pretty magical for vivid imaginations. I was most impressed by the quality of food and the horse tricks!

Lately I've been treating myself to pizzafries

Just buy the frozen fries, put them in the oven for about 10 minutes at 425. Then put them in a pile and add your favorite spaghetti sauce. Then sprinkle mozzarella and pepperoni all over it. Put it back in the oven for about 8 minutes. It's delicious and nutri... delicious!

The official Ramen homepage

Ramen makes great meals for backpacking, and the ramen salad is one of my favorite salads of all time.

Week of April 25th

Batting theory of Rotational Mechanics

Being in two softball leagues this year playing 4 nights a week got me interested in baseball/softball swing physics. Rotational mechanics is the opposition to Linear swing theory which you'll most commonly find taught. Barry Bond's swing is based on rotational mechanics, whether he's aware of it or not.

Revolutionary top of the line bicycle security system

I think this guy is actually protesting something, though I'm not sure what.

On the run from jonny law

There is a warrant out for this brilliant man and his sidekick. With fans like these, who needs fans?

Cell phone camera saves life

Listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s most poisonous spider, the Brazilian Wandering Spider is 4 to 5 inches long at full grown size. It looks almost as scary as it actually is.

Week of April 18th

MLB.TV the cure for baseball fever

I caught baseball fever this year pretty bad. A debilitating sickness I haven't had since high school. I may have found the perfect cure for me since I don't have cable or satellite, and MLB.TV streams 97% of all major league games live and/or archived.

Bad day at the pool video

I give him an "A" for effort.

Baby Name Wizard graphic database

This is kind of a nifty program for looking up how popular a name is and the direction its trending. The name "William" has stood the test of time as the #2 name in 1900, it finally fell out of the top 10 boy names in the '70's but is now picking up steam again in the 00's.

Wolverine scare in UK

Truly one of the more fascinating animals, the Wolverine, a.k.a. "skunk bear" (as my friend Dylan pointed out to me in grade school) is pound for pound one of the most vicious animals on earth.

Week of April 11th

Taxes due Friday

We got our taxes done with two days to spare this year, we didn't quite put it off till the last minute like last year. Hey I knew our kid was going to come in handy for something other than an excuse for making a website. Go Go child tax breaks!

North Korea Vows to Increase Nuclear Deterrent

This stuff reminds me of our old Risk board game battles. If one person starts building up a border, then the other person has to match it or use some tactict to hold them off. There's the David Freeman strategy of putting one army piece on the border, and the rest in the middle just to dare someone to take his border country and consequently face the wrath of his multitudes. Then there's the Patrick Chilton method (my favorite); make it common knowledge that you WILL go kamikaze against the first person that attacks you.

Tallest operating hotel in the world the Burj Al Arab

The Burj in United Arab Emirates is 102 stories tall, just a little shorter than the Empire State Building. It's easy on the eyes, hard on the wallet at around $900 a night.

Another reason to keep your dog leashed

I'm glad there aren't Moose near us. Humans usually just run back inside their house when chased by our dog, avoiding pools all together.

Week of April 4th

Great personal backpacking stove

They based the design off of the alcohol stove. These are some of the most reliable, sturdy, light, cheap, and simple backpacking stoves to own. The main problem with using alcohol as fuel is that its BTU output per weight of fuel, is around half that of other fuels. But the Thermojet stove overcomes this by being over 65% efficient, and that the canister to carry the fuel can be a simple plastic bottle unlike the requirements of other camping fuel canisters. The MSR Pocket Rocket is on of the best conventional backpacking stoves if you're not into the alcohol stove thing.

Good merchandise review site Epinions.com

If you can't find a review on Amazon.com or elsewhere, you can check Epinions. They also list some of the cheaper places to buy the item your searching for.

Another link on the backpacking theme Backpacking.net

Some of the suggestions go a little overboard on this site, but it has some good ideas to get you moving in the right direction. I seem to have backpacking on the brain!

Canada health care wait times

And you thought your 4 hour wait in the emergency room was bad, try hip replacement surgery recommended wait time of 25 weeks. Still contemplating that move to Canada?

Week of March 28

I *acquired* a slick sound program called Sonar 4 by Cakewalk

I'm having a lot of fun with Cakewalk. It allows me to take songs that I like and totally destroy them by singing each part in my own voice. This song for example was by That Dog, obliterated by me.

Yet another heinous crime in the dangerous world of online gaming

I don't know what I'd do if someone messed around with my cyber sword collection. Let's just hope that never happens.

Awesome surfing video

This was filmed at a place called Peahi Point on the Northeastern shore of Maui, where they named the wave Jaws. To ride what's considered to be the worlds largest wave (40 to 70 feet), they use a technique called tow-in surfing. A jet ski tows the surfer with a rope to achieve the required speed to ride one of these monsters.

Week of March 21

We've chosen a cruise!

Although Princess Cruise line isn't known for its kid amenities and kid fares like Carnival and Disney cruises, that shouldn't stop us grownup kids from having fun! We can always go on a Carnival or Disney cruise when Jonas gets older and can enjoy it. Come join us. Got Snorkel?

A behind the scenes documentary on Air America Radio

I don't know how much credibility an HBO documentary would have, but it cant be any worse than a Michael Moore "documentary". Either way, this should be good for a few chuckles at the blunders of Rush and Hannity's competition.

!!*Joe makes first "A" since high school*!!

This is some exciting news. I finished my first online course worth 9 credits, and I have a 4.00 GPA! AIU seems to be a good fit so far, I never had to leave my computer chair.

State Patrolman gunned down at his home

This story is sad and eerie. I played basketball versus the guy they suspect did this. He was a fierce competitor, but not real bright.

Week of March 14

I used my "joe's corner" time this week to redesign my website.

I will leave you with a very cool Saint Pat's day song. Its an Irish immigration tune called Paddy's Green Shamrock Shore. I'll slowly be converting over to the white background style, so some pages will remain the classic green/black for a while.

History of expeditions to climb the mountain named K2

K2 at 28,250 ft, is the 2nd highest mountain in the world. It is placed on the Pakistan - China border in the mighty Karakoram range. Many books and several movies have been made about adventures on this mountain. K2 is known as the finest and most dangerous mountain in the world. This is a picture of Hilary and I on a little known mountain in West Virginia that has nothing to do with K2 at all.

A few pictures 1 2 of David and Alice Fowler's wonderful new house

Nestled in the Ozark hills of Spring Camp Ranch, this lovely abode overlooks green fields and dense forests. Driving out to the Fowler's house from the nearest paved road: $2 gas. Cost of a key to get passed the locked gate: $0.30. Spending time with the Fowlers: priceless.

Pretty cool online Bible page with lots of translations and languages

"A man who was merely a man, and said the sort of things Jesus said, would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic--on a level with the man who says he is a poached egg--or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God: or else a madman or something worse."- C.S. Lewis

There are other ways to listen to these shows, but the Hannity and Rush streams have the local commercials cut out.
