Copyright 1995 By Larry Ulmer The Legend Of Otterville The night was dark The Union camp lay still On the banks of the river Just East of Otterville Then thru the night The rebel troops they came Theyd burn the bridge Theyd stop the trains The fires they lit Thru the night did roar When daylight came The bridge stood no more
The General came And gazed with great concern For without this bridge The tides of war would turn For over this bridge On ribbons of steel Passed the supply trains With their rumbling wheels For over this bridge The wheels of war did churn Cannon and shot, powder to burn
He paused for a moment Thinking of the men hed kill Then he turned to his troops And gave the order to rebuild Twice more this would happen For the rebels were iron willed Twice more he would give The order to rebuild Twice more he would ponder Of the men that he would kill So went the saga Just East of Otterville
Now if you're at the river Where the bridge is standing still Just pause for a moment Listen closely if you will Youll hear the muskets rattle And the cries of men they killed Theyll call to you from history Just East of Otterville
