Charles Kuralt's America

By My Personal Hero, Charles Kuralt,

Greatest Interpreter Who Ever Lived

I was once fortunate enough to hear Charles Kuralt speak in person. In a time of air strikes on Iraq and problems at home, he was most interested in where in America one could find the best pie. It wasn't that he didn't care about or understand those issues, he was once a war correspondant in Vietnam, but he felt the pie was important too. When he passed away recently, we lost a voice that had told us again and again, that America wasn't going to hell in a handbasket. He found our true strength in the common people of the countryside. What we didn't know is that he had started as a writer, and writing was still what he did best. If you've ever enjoyed a segment of "On The Road" with Charles Kuralt during the CBS Evening News, you will enjoy and perhaps come to cherish his books.

Paul Theroux
Paul Theroux is in many ways the "Anti-Kuralt." Where Charles Kuralt travelled America seeing only the good and wholesome in people, Paul Theroux has travelled the world and often broods on the gloomy and gritty side of our world and its people. So why do I love both these travel writers? They can both move the reader with poetic style and imagery. From Kuralt I carry in my mind forever a picture of a federal judge flyfishing, and from Theroux a scene of Indian begger woman sprawled across the train tracks.

I'll never see all the world, I'll never spend my life wandering America by Winnebago or Asia by train, so I need them to tell me what's what out there. I know the world is neither as glum as Theroux's vision nor as happy as Kuralt's, but they both have their legitimate ways of looking at people.

Theroux, by the way, wrote "Mosquito Coast" which became a movie starring Harrison Ford.
