By My Personal Hero, Charles Kuralt,
Greatest Interpreter Who Ever Lived
I was once fortunate enough to hear Charles Kuralt speak
in person. In a time of air strikes on Iraq and problems at home,
he was most interested in where in America one could find the
best pie. It wasn't that he didn't care about or understand those
issues, he was once a war correspondant in Vietnam, but he felt
the pie was important too. When he passed away recently, we lost
a voice that had told us again and again, that America wasn't
going to hell in a handbasket. He found our true strength in
the common people of the countryside. What we didn't know is
that he had started as a writer, and writing was still what he
did best. If you've ever enjoyed a segment of "On The Road"
with Charles Kuralt during the CBS Evening News, you will enjoy
and perhaps come to cherish his books.
