Pastured Poultry & Eggs
We raise our chickens from day old chicks in our brooders until they are mature enough to take outside.
Eggers:
Our egg layers are then housed in a portable range hoop house built on skids
so that we can move the chickens to a fresh pasture location when they need it,
rather than have them live in a barren, dirty "chicken yard". They are protected from predators by a
portable mesh fence or allowed to range free. This way, they get plenty of exercise and
access to fresh grass and bugs all the time, and the pasture gets
a chance to
rest and
re-grow after the chickens have had a chance
to clean it up and work it. We supplement their diet with a
customized, non-medicated, high protein poultry feed. We gather
eggs several times daily and offer them to our customers as fresh as they can
be. Their eggs are country-style brown.
Broiler Chickens:
Our broilers are also moved outside to portable pens when they
are old enough, and we move their pens to fresh pasture daily to
give them access to new grass and more bugs as well. They also
are given high protein, non-medicated feed, and plenty of fresh
air and exercise. We keep them in groups of 100 or less, so they
are not crowded together as are "factory" chickens.
This eliminates the need to debeak them to prevent them pecking
or cannibalizing each other as do chickens raised in crowded
cages in factory chicken houses. This also eliminates the need to
heavily medicate them for a.) diseases caused by overcrowding and
unhealthy, unnatural practices, and/or b.) as a method to promote
rapid growth and weight gain. We promote natural growth and
health through good husbandry. We process our broiler chickens right on our farm within a day or two of when our customers pick
them up. These, too, are as natural and fresh as they can be. We
personally hand process our chickens, taking care to keep them
clean and sanitary throughout processing. Factory processing
utilizes bleach baths to soak the birds in to clean them up after
mechanical processing. We prefer not to eat bleached chickens and
know that many of you do, too, so we keep them clean to begin
with.. We offer a number of pick-up days for our customers each
season, so you know the chickens you buy from us are always as
fresh as can be.
Turkeys:
We
raise turkeys the same way as we do egg layers. They are completely
free-ranged. Their curiosity makes them follow human around. If you
like, come over to our farm and take a walk with turkeys. You will love
them, and they are tasty too,.
This season we will be raising Broad Breasted Whites (BBWs) for mid-season (these are the breed we've raised in the past) and a variety of Heritage turkeys for Thanksgiving. We will raise the BBWs for a shorter period of time to produce smaller turkeys than what we have had, and the Heritage turkeys for longer because they grow much slower. As most of you know, we have a very limited number of turkeys, so don't wait to order AND pay your deposit if you want a turkey. Deposit refundable at our discretion only.
